Today’s townland is Blaris, near Lisburn.
According to PLACENAMESNI, the name Blaris comes from the Irish Bláras meaning ‘a field’. So here is a Blaris field, complete with horse.
Further west along the Blaris Road, beyond the modern Lisburn New Cemetery, lies an older graveyard, still bearing the townland name.Past the graveyard, the Blaris Road crosses into the next townland: Maze.
My visit to Blaris is honestly represented in these photos, as I spent my morning walking in the peaceful old burial ground and along the river. But just out of sight, and almost out of earshot, is the M1 Motorway. Listen to a local traffic report and the morning rush hour often brings news that “the M1 is busy from Junction 8 Blaris into Belfast.”
