Orlock

Today’s townland is Orlock, on the coast of County Down.

I sat on the rocks beside the North Down Coastal Path, watching cormorants, gulls, curlews and a seal.

Looking in the other direction I could see County Antrim.

This map gives you a good idea of the location of Orlock.

You can’t miss Orlock if you drive east from Groomsport.

Start walking, and you find yet another sign.

The website of the Northern Ireland Place Names Project suggests that the name Orlock comes from the Irish word urloch meaning ‘before /on the edge of the lough’.
