Portavogie

The townland of Portavogie is located on the south-east coast of the Ards Peninsula in County Down.  It includes the village and harbour of the same name.

Portavogie Harbour lifebuoyPortavogie is a small village, but punches above its weight because of its fishing fleet.

Portavogie netsAccording to the PLACENAMESNI website, the name Portavogie comes from the Irish Port an Bhogaigh meaning port or place of the boggy area.  To the west of the village the route across the peninsula is called Bog Road.

To the east the townland ends with this beach and the Irish Sea.

    • Hi Karolyn this brings back loads of memories. I first met Lady Patsy Fisher and her second husband Sir Nigel Fisher at their home at Portavogie back in1972. They interviewed me for a job with their daughter in London Lady Sally Grylls. Mother of Bear Grylls! I lived with the family in Kennington Road London for 8 months. Fab family. Patsy was a member of Parliament Ulster Unionist. She surname the. Was Ford. Her father died at sea just of Portavogie. Mxx
